Lubricating Your Car's Exterior Parts

*VERY EASY*

After identifying all appropriate points, use the following procedure to lubricate exterior parts:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual).
  2. Wipe all surfaces clean before applying any new grease or oil. Grease can be purchased in aerosol form for easy application. Engine oil can be placed in small squirt cans for easy application too. Work the hinge or mechanism a few times after applying grease or oil to all moving parts and contact surfaces in order to spread lubricant throughout the part. A rotating part like a roller pin or hinge pin should be oiled. A sliding part like a door check cam should be greased. Grease the door striker plate and striker bolt as well. Immediately wipe off any excess or overspray.
  3. Apply lubricant inside the door key slot. Use a light oil aerosol spray (like WD-40®) on door lock cylinder. This lubricant will displace moisture and prevent the lock cylinder from freezing. Do not apply so much that it runs out of key slot and drips on car paint. If this happens, immediately wipe off the excess oil. Work the lock with your key several times.
  4. Clean the rubber weather strip around the doors, windows, trunk, or hatchback with wet rag. Apply lubricant to a clean rag and rub it into the weather strip along its entire length. Use only silicone-based lubricant. Be sure to cover the entire surface and all crevices. Let it dry.
